Abstract

The Architectural Design Studio is a core course that serves as a platform for students to learn and apply various approaches in building design processes. The function of the studio space is crucial in this course, as it directly affects the effectiveness of learning, level of concentration, and the quality of students' design outcomes. Therefore, strong connectivity between academic activities and both physical and emotional comfort is essential. However, in practice, Design Studio 6, which is used as the case study in this research, has not sufficiently addressed these aspects. This study aims to assess the quality of the studio space through an empathic design approach, focusing on users’ physical and emotional comfort. A qualitative method was employed, including field observation, focus group discussions, and questionnaires distributed to active students. The findings reveal adequate lighting and ventilation, yet deficiencies in spatial flexibility, collaborative areas, and furniture comfort, which significantly impact users’ well-being. Design recommendations are proposed based on empathic design principles.
