About the Proceedings

The proceeding carries the theme Resilient Architecture. In an era of increasing environmental uncertainties, resilient architecture has become a vital approach to designing buildings that can endure and adapt to challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, and resource scarcity. This concept integrates sustainable design principles, advanced materials, and innovative construction techniques to enhance the durability, flexibility, and efficiency of the built environment. By emphasizing adaptability, energy efficiency, and disaster preparedness, resilient architecture not only extends the lifespan of structures but also strengthens community well-being.

The proceeding compile research papers whose contributions cover four topics, which are:

  • Human Well-being and Local Wisdom in Resilient Architecture
  • Energy Efficiency and Smart Technologies in Resilient Architecture
  • Sustainable Materials and Construction for Resilient Architecture
  • Urban Planning and Design for Resilient Cities

PROCEEDINGS HISTORY

International Conference on Empathic Architecture (ICEA) is a biennial conference held by the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning, Petra Christian University, Indonesia. In 2025, ICEA took place for the sixth time. ICEA focused on empathic architecture and its impact on related subjects, including Architectural Design, Technology and Science, History, Theory, and Criticism, Housing and Urban Development, and Environmental Studies.

The 6th ICEA and Sustainable Environment and Architecture (SENVAR) joined together and invited participants to reflect on and understand the role of resilience in the development of the built environment and human society. Thus, the theme of 6th ICEA - SENVAR 2025 was “Resilient Architecture”. The 6th ICEA SENVAR 2025 was held on 2 -3 October 2025.

Here is the history of previous ICEA:

  • The 1st International Conference on Empathic Architecture (1st ICEA) held on 11-12 September 2014 which focused on the theme of empathic architecture, encompassing sub-topics such as technology, culture, and architectural education.
  • The 2nd International Conference on Empathic Architecture (2nd ICEA) took place in conjunction with the 17th SENVAR on 1-2 March 2017. The theme for this conference was "Wisdom and Practice of the Sustainable Built Environment for Better Living."
  • The 3rd International Conference on Empathic Architecture (3rd ICEA) occurred from 25-27 April 2019. The papers presented at this conference were published in IOP. Conference Proceeding: Earth and Environmental Science, Volume 490 (https://iopscience.iop.org/issue/1755-1315/490/1).
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, the 4th International Conference on Empathic Architecture (4th ICEA) was conducted on 26 February 2021, titled "Architecture for All" (https://www.youtube.com/live/SZkoRcKT4wk?feature=share).
  • The 5th International Conference on Empathic Architecture (5th ICEA) held on 19-20 October 2023 which addressed the theme of "Architecture for Health and Well-Being." The papers presented at this event were published in the IOP Conference Proceeding: Earth and Environmental Science, Volume 1301 (https://iopscience.iop.org/issue/1755-1315/1301/1).
